Senator from the Twenty-eighth Senatorial District, composed of Marshall county, was born of English parentage near Hull Yorkshire, England, September 2, 1840. The family emigrated from England to the United States In 1849 and settled near Sterling, Whiteside county, Illinois, opening up a brickyard near there. He attended school in England and a graded school in Lee county, Illinois. In August, 1861, he enlisted in Company D, Thirty-fourth Illinois Infantry, serving in the same company as sergeant, lieutenant and captain until the end of the war. He served with both Buell and Thomas and went with Sherman to the sea and was with the army at the grand review at Washington, D. C. At the close of the war he came to Iowa and purchased land near Marshalltown, upon which he resides. Has a wife and four children, one daughter and three sons, all of whom are married. Served in the Twenty first and Twenty-second General Assemblies in the House and Thirtieth, Thirty first and Thirty-second in the Senate. A Republican in politics.
