Senator from the Forty-fifth District, composed of the counties of Benton and Tama, was born on a farm near Vinton, Iowa, December 26, 1856. His father was a native of Ohio and his mother of Indiana. He graduated from the academical department of the University of Iowa in June, 1877, and from the law department of the University in June, 1878. Entered the practice of law at Vinton, Iowa, August 14, 1878, and has been in continuous practice ever since. In March, 1879, he was elected city attorney and held that office for many years. Elected Senator in 1901 and re-elected in 1906, and served during the Twenty-ninth, Thirtieth, Thirty-first, Thirty-second and Thirty-second extra General Assemblies. Was chairman of the committee on State educational institutions, appointed by the Thirtieth General Assembly to investigate the system of management of the educational institutions of Iowa. A detailed report of the findings and conclusions of the committee was made to the Thirty-first General Assembly. A Republican in politics.
