Representative from Decatur county, was born at Potters Mills, Center county, Pennsylvania, August 2, 1843, of American-born parents. Moved to Louisa county, Iowa, with his parents in 1849. Was educated in the common schools and raised on a farm. Performed the labor incident to farm life in a new country. Enlisted as a private in the Third Regiment Iowa Cavalry Volunteers August 15, 1861, and re-enlisted as a veteran in the same company and regiment in January, 1864. Was severely wounded June 11, 1864, resulting in amputation of left leg above the knee. Was sheriff two terms from 1870 to 1874, county treasurer from 1878 to 1880, and clerk of the district and circuit courts two terms from 1885 to 1889. Was a member of the House during the Thirtieth and Thirty-first General Assemblies. Resided in Louisa county from 1849 to 1856, and in Decatur county continuously since. Was married to Mary M. Gillham May 3, 1866, has eight children, four sons and four daughters. Wife died on the 27th of March, 1907. Elected Representative in 1903 and served during the Thirtieth and Thirty-first General Assemblies. Again elected in 1908. A Democrat in politics.
