Senator from the Twenty-first District, composed of the county of Scott, was born in Blair county, Pennsylvania, March 7, 1852. His father was born in Maryland and his mother in Pennsylvania. His father was the son of a Revolutionary soldier, his mother of Pennsylvania Dutch antecedents. At the age of fourteen years he came with his parents to Iowa, where he has since resided. Attended the public schools of Davenport and graduated from the high school in 1872. While teaching school for two years he read medicine and then entered the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1876. Then located in LeClaire, Scott county, where he practiced his profession for thirteen years. Moved to Davenport in 1889 and has since resided there. Although always taking an active interest in politics, he was never a candidate for public office until 1904, when he was elected to the City Council from his home ward; in 1906 he was again elected, but as alderman-at-large. Elected Senator in 1906. A Democrat in politics.
