Senator from the Forty-second District, composed of the counties of Howard and Winneshiek, was born at Fairfield, Sommerset county, Maine, December 20, 1846, of American-born parents. Moved to Lansing, Iowa, in 1861, where he secured his education in the common schools and in a private school maintained by the Congregational church. Taught school one term and worked for a short time in the postoffice and in an implement store at Lansing. Moved to Ossian in 1865 and became manager of a lumber yard, where he remained for fifteen years. In 1880 he moved to Elma, and engaged in the mercantile business with his brother. He was successively engaged in business at Hull, Iowa, and Mitchell, South Dakota, leaving the latter place to go on a claim near what is now Mount Vernon, South Dakota. Afterwards removed to Cresco, Iowa, to re-engage in the lumber business, where he now resides. Has been a member of the school boards and of the town councils at Ossian and at Cresco. Elected Senator in 1906. A Republican in politics.
