Senator from the Eighteenth District, composed of the counties of Cass and Shelby, was born at Brooklyn, Poweshiek county, April 14, 1860. His father was born in Ohio and his mother in New Jersey. He was educated in the common schools of Brooklyn and vicinity and the Law Department of the State University of Iowa, graduating from the latter in 1881. He was early in life thrown on his own resources, his father having died in the army. He located at Anita, Iowa, where he commenced the practice of law. Was elected County Attorney of Cass county in 1891 and served for one term. In recent years has devoted most of his time to banking and general business affairs, at present owning the controlling interest in five banks. Elected Senator from the Eighteenth District in 1901, securing his seat, after a contest before the Legislature, by a majority of fifteen votes over J. M. Emmert. Reelected in 1906 by a majority of 289. A Republican in politics.
