He was early in life thrown on his own resources, his father having died in the army. He located at Anita, Iowa, where he commenced the practice of law. Was elected County Attorney of Cass county in 1891 and served for one term. In recent years has devoted most of his time to banking and general business affairs, at present owning the controlling interest in five banks. Elected Senator from the Eighteenth District in 1901, securing his seat, after a contest before the Legislature, by a majority of fifteen votes over J. M. Emmert. Reelected in 1906 by a majority of 289. A Republican in politics.
