Senator from the Twenty-eighth District, composed of Marshall county, was born in Keokuk county, Iowa, on a farm, July 9, 1869, of American-born parents. His early education was attained in the country school of the district where he was born, with the exception of a few years' absence, during which he attended graded school. Taught school in the vicinity of his home for some two years, during which time he took up the study of law, devoting his spare time thereto, under the direction of Hon. J. F. Lacey. Later entered Oskaloosa College, where he did preparatory work for entering the State University. Entered the collegiate department of the State University of Iowa in 1893 and graduated therefrom in 1896. Upon his graduation was awarded a fellowship in Political Science in the State University, and the following year was awarded an instructorship in Economics in the same institution. In October, 1897, was admitted to the bar, and in June, 1898, located at Marshalltown, Iowa, in the practice of law. Since that time has devoted himself exclusively to law practice. In March, 1901 was elected city solicitor of the city of Marshalltown, to which position he was re-elected without opposition in 1903. Elected Senator in 1908. A Republican in politics.
