He was left an orphan at an early age, as he was born after his father's death and his mother died when he was but seven years old. He moved to Mahaska county, Iowa, in March, 1861, and to O'Brien county in June, 1871, where he has lived ever since. Was a member of Company C, Thirty-third Iowa, about eighteen months, during the War of the Rebellion. Admitted to practice law in 1881. Elected to the legislature in 1883, 1885, 1908 and 1910; defeated in 1887 and 1889. A Republican in politics.
