Senator from the Thirty-second District, composed of the county of Woodbury, was born on a farm in Butler county, Iowa, January 12, 1858. His father was born in county Antrim, Ireland, and his mother was of Kentucky and Ohio ancestry and born in Warren county, Indiana. His parents located in Butler county, Iowa, in 1854, and he resided upon his father's farm until he was twenty-one years old. His education was acquired in the country schools of Butler county, in Lenox College, Hopkinton, Iowa, from which he graduated in 1879, and in the Law Department of the State University of Iowa, from which he graduated in 1881. Was married in 1881 to Miss Olive Ann Merrill, also a native of Butler county. They have two daughters. Began practicing law at Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 1882. Located in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1887, where he has since been engaged in the law practice. Is president of the Western Land and Loan company and extensively interested in farming and stock raising. Elected Senator in 1908. A Republican in politics.
