Senator from the Eighth District, composed of the counties of Mills and Montgomery, was born in Mills county, December 14, 1856. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother in North Carolina. He attended the Liberal Arts and Law Departments of the State University, graduating from that institution in 1884. After graduation he began the practice of law at Glenwood. Elected to fill a vacancy on the Board of Regents of the State University for the Ninth District in June, 1891, and twice re-elected, serving until he entered the Senate in 1904. In the fall of 1892 was elected County Attorney and served for a period of six years, during which time he secured the conviction, without assistant counsel, of one hundred and eighteen persons in the District Court with the second lowest per capita for expense for conviction of any county in the State. His family consists of a wife, two sons and a daughter. Elected Senator in 1903 and re-elected in 1908. Served during the Thirtieth, Thirty-first, Thirty-second, Thirty-second extra, Thirty-third and Thirty-fourth General Assemblies. He was chairman of the Judiciary committee during the session of the Thirty-fourth General Assembly. A Republican in politics and a Congregationalist in religion.
