Senator from the Forty-fourth district, composed of the counties of Chickasaw and Floyd, was born at St. Louis, Missouri, May 26, 1859, of German-French parentage. His parents moved to Dubuque when he was four years old and here he was educated in the public schools. He worked in a drug store for a time. Moved to Charles City in 1877, where he worked at farming, teaching school and clerking until 1884, when he engaged in business with W. C. Herbrecht under the firm name of Legel & Herbrecht. This firm was dissolved in 1887, since which time he has been alone in the drug and grocery business. He was married in 1884 to Miss Bertha C. Dinkel. Although Mr. Legel has been a member of the minority party he has repeatedly represented his ward on the city council of Charles City; also served as mayor of that city for two years. He has also for many years been a member of the library board and for some years was president of that board. He has also served on the commercial club, Chautauqua board, and other progressive bodies in his home city. Elected senator in 1910. A democrat in politics.
