Albia, Marion, and Monroe Counties Democrat. Born Feb. 2, 1910, in Monroe County, son of John H. and Jennie Dougherty. Graduate of St. Patrick's High School, Georgetown, Iowa. Farm owner and operator, devoted entire life to community affairs. Past director and state president of Iowa Rural Young Peoples' Assembly. Past ex-officio director Iowa Farm Bureau. State Level plowing champion 1950. Three consecutive years county contour champion. Participated in two national matches, Ohio, Missouri, the Wheatland and Big Rock matches, Illinois. Judged many county, district, and state matches, Conservation Award 1953, Iowa Plowman's Hall of Fame, 1966, Emerald Clover Award 25 years 4-H Club leadership. Married Lucille Mottet 1955; one daughter, Theresa. Member Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Associate Chamber of Commerce, past director, vice pres. 4-H. FFA Fair Board. Governor's Comm. on Aging. President's White House hearing committee. Served in 60th Extra, 61st, 63rd and 64th General Assemblies.

Attended rural schools, graduated from St. Patrick's High School, Georgetown, Iowa, 1928. Following graduation has farmed on farm where born; has also devoted entire life to community affairs. Was director and state president of Iowa Rural Young Peoples Assembly; served as ex officio director Iowa Farm Bureau; in county Farm Bureau offices and on numerous extension committees. State level land plowing champion 1950. Three consecutive years county contour plowing champion. Participated in two national plowing matches, and the Wheatland and Big Rock matches in Illinois. Judged many county, district and state matches. Received conservation award in 1953, Iowa Plowman's Hall of Fame 1966, 4-H award of the Emerald Clover in recognition of 25 years of 4-H club leadership. Married Lucille Mottet, Oct. 29, 1955. One daughter, Theresa Anne, attending St. Mary's School, Albia. Member St. Mary's Catholic Church. Albia; past grand knight Knights of Columbus. 4th Degree McMullen Assembly; member of Eagles. Agriculture Committee of Albia Chamber of Commerce, past vice-president 4-H-FFA Fair Board. Member Iowa State Fair Tractor-Pulling- Rules Committee.
