Senator from the Twentieth district, composed of the counties of Muscatine and Louisa, was born March 31, 1857, in Concord township, Louisa county. He was the eldest child of Barton and Elizabeth Garrett. His father was born in Kentucky, and his mother in Ohio, he was united in marriage with Laura S. Dill in 1879. He has been engaged in farming and the live stock and grain business all of his life. He was elected senator in 1910. A democrat in politics.
