Senator from the Ninth district, comprising Des Moines county, was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa, September 30, 1859, and is the son of Rev. W. F. Cowles and Marie LaMonte Cowles, both natives of New York state. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1879. Was admitted to the bar in 1886, since which time he has practiced law at Burlington. For ten years he was chairman of the republican congressional committee for the first district and for four years he was a member of the republican state committee. Mr. Cowles is a Knight Templar and a Shriner, he is also a member of the A. Q. U. W., W. O. W. and B. P. O. E. He was married in 1886 to Miss Hattie E. Kane, who died in 1889, leaving a daughter. Mr. Cowles was again married in 1897 to Miss Ida S. Miller. Elected senator in 1910. A republican in politics.
