Senator from the Sixteenth district, composed of Adair and Madison counties, was born at Prairieburg, Linn county, Iowa, January 2, 1870. His parents were born in New York state. Moved with parents to Stuart, Iowa, in spring of 1874, to Dexter, Iowa, in 1880, and again to Stuart in 1885. Attended the schools of Stuart and Dexter, also attended Iowa College. Grinnell, Iowa, from fall of 1887 until spring of 1891. Located in Adair in 1893, where he has since resided. Was married to Miss Maude Smull of Stuart, October 31, 1894. Was school treasurer of Adair for twelve years. Elected senator in 1908. Re-elected in 1912. A republican in politics.

On leaving college entered the Exchange Bank at Stuart, and in December, 1891, commenced employment in Bank of Dexter, going to Adair in summer of 1893, and has since resided in that place. With his father, he opened the Farmers Bank at Adair in December, 1895, which was thus conducted until fall of 1903, when he assumed the entire ownership. Is also interested in the Exchange State Bank, Stuart, and State Bank of Dexter. Was married to Miss Maude Smull of Stuart, October 31, 1894. Was school treasurer of Adair for twelve years. Elected senator in 1908. Re-elected in 1912. A republican in politics.
