Was educated in the common schools and private study evenings while engaged as a miner. Read law with A. C. Steck of Ottumwa, Iowa, and admitted to practice by the supreme court of Iowa, May 25, 1895. Elected county attorney of Monroe county in 1896 and re-elected in 1898. Elected senator in 1908. Re-elected in 1912. A democrat in politics.
