Senator from the eighteenth district, composed of the counties of Cass and Shelby, was born in White House, New Jersey, May 18, 1865, of American parentage. Acquired a common school education. In 1881 when 16 years of age, he came to Anita, Iowa, where he was employed in a hardware store as clerk and general utility man receiving for his services the sum of five dollars per month. After engaging in various lines of industry he finally became interested in the banking business and is now owner of the Anita Bank, one of the most thriving banking institutions of the state. Has been very active in the interests of his home town. Is a member of the Anita Commercial Club and held the position of councilman for 16 years. Is an active Mason and a member of other fraternal organizations. His political career started when he served as page in the New Jersey senate in the years of 1877 and 1878, during which time he became thoroughly inoculated with the principles of democracy. Was married to Ottumwa E. Gaylord at Anita, Oct. 1, 1884. Elected senator in 1914. A democrat in politics, being the first of that faith elected from the eighteenth district since the 28th general assembly.
