Representative from Bremer county, was born in Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa, January 5, 1881. Attended the Cedar Valley Seminary at Osage and graduated there from in 1900. Attended Iowa College at Grinnell one year. Also studied law at the University of Iowa two years. Lived in Iowa all his life except three years that he spent in western South Dakota. In the lumber, grain and coal business at Tripoli, Bremer county, Iowa, also at Oran in Fayette county. This is the first political office ever held, having never before been a candidate for any office. Son of ex-senator Jas. A. Smith of Osage. Is a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Masonic Order. Married to Miss Sadie E. Messenger of Waverly, Iowa, in 1912, and have one daughter, Jean Ellen. A republican in politics. Elected representative 1916.
