Senator from the thirty-fifth district, comprising the county of Dubuque, was born on a farm in Dubuque county. August 23, 1853, of Luxemburg German parentage. Attended country and city schools and graduated from St. Francis Normal School, Milwaukee, in 1874. Taught country and graded school for five terms. Was deputy county auditor for three years, resigning that office in 1883 to become secretary and later general manager of the Dubuque Fire & Marine Insurance Company, which position he still occupies. He is president of the German Savings Bank and prominently identified with other Dubuque institutions. Was a member of the Dubuque board of education for ten years and served two terms. Elected senator in 1910. Re-elected 1914. A democrat in politics.
