Senator from the thirty-fourth district, composed of Crawford, Harrison and Monona counties, was born in Boone county, Iowa, July 18, 1869. He spent the first thirteen years of his life in Boone county, attending school at Moingona, Ogden and Boone in that county, and after attending high school at Coon Rapids, Iowa. Here he became a printer and thereafter followed that occupation until in 1889 he became proprietor of the Argus, newspaper at Ashton, Iowa. Two years later he became part owner of the Tribune, a county seat paper at Sibley, Osceola county, Iowa, which he edited for six years. While at Sibley Mr. Caswell was married to Miss Eva L. Clark at Ashton, Iowa. They removed to Denison, Iowa, in 1897, where Mr. Caswell purchased the Bulletin, a weekly newspaper, which he still owns and operates as a semi-weekly paper. He was a candidate for state treasurer on the Democratic ticket in 1912, and was elected senator in his district in 1914 as a democrat.
