He spent the first thirteen years of his life in Boone county, attending school at Moingona, Ogden and Boone in that county, and after attending high school at Coon Rapids, Iowa. Here he became a printer and thereafter followed that occupation until in 1889 he became proprietor of the Argus, newspaper at Ashton, Iowa. Two years later he became part owner of the Tribune, a county seat paper at Sibley, Osceola county, Iowa, which he edited for six years. While at Sibley Mr. Caswell was married to Miss Eva L. He was a candidate for state treasurer on the Democratic ticket in 1912, and was elected senator in his district in 1914 as a democrat.
