Senator from the Forty-third district, comprising the counties of Cerro Gordo, Franklin and Hancock, was born at Mason City, Iowa, January 4th, 1876, and is the son of General James Rule and Jennie A. Rule. He attended the public schools of Mason City until 1892, then he entered Shattuck School at Faribault, Minnesota, graduating in 1895. Went to the Northwestern University. Served in Spanish-American war as first lieutenant and battalion adjutant of Fifty-second Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Later entered the State University of Iowa where he took his law course. He located with Judge Cook of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the law department of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad and later in the law department of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern, under S. K. Tracey. In 1902 he became and is now a member of the firm of Blythe, Markley, Rule and Smith engaged in the general practice of law at Mason City, Iowa. Is a member of the Masonic lodge, Odd Fellows, K.P.'s and Elks. He was married in June, 1901, at Cedar Rapids, to Miss Edith Brady of that place and has two daughters, Edith and Margaret. Elected senator in 1916. A republican in politics.

Senator from the forty-third district, comprising the counties of Cerro Gordo, Franklin and Hancock, was born at Mason City, Iowa, January the 4, 1876 and is the son of General James Rule and Jennie A. Went to the Northwestern University until the spring of 1897 when he was forced to leave on account of ill-health and spent a year in Arizona. Later entered the State University of Iowa where he took his law course. After the completion of his law course he located with Judge J. C. Cook of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the law department of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad and later in the law department of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern, under S. K. Tracey. In 1902 he became a member of the firm of Blythe, Markley and Rule at Mason City and is now a member of the firm of Blythe, Markley, Rule and Smith engaged in the general practice of law at Mason City, Iowa. Has always been a republican in politics and has served at various times as delegate to the state conventions and for two years was chairman of the county central committee of Cerro Gordo county. In June 1916 he was nominated as the republican candidate for the senate for the forty-third district and was elected at the November election, taking his seat January 8, 1917. Is a member of the Masonic lodge, Odd Fellows, K.P's and Elks and has served in the Grand lodge of both the Elk's and the K.P's. He was married in June 1901, at Cedar Rapids, to Miss Edith Brady of that place and of this marriage has been born two daughters, Edith and Margaret.
