Senator from the Fortieth district, composed of Allamakee and Fayette counties, was born in Allamakee county, March 1, 1864. His father, born in Vermont, served as representative in the eleventh general assembly and as senator in the twelfth and thirteenth general assemblies and for twenty years was judge of the Thirteenth judicial district of Iowa. His mother was a native of New York. He obtained his education in the public schools of Lansing and the Upper Iowa University at Fayette. Served the city of Lansing for eight years as councilman and four years as mayor. Married Miss Elsie Smith of Cresco, Iowa, in 1889. Has one daughter and five sons, three sons being now in military service. Is engaged in the lumber business and is president of the Peoples State Bank at Lansing, Iowa. Elected senator in 1912, re-elected in 1916. A republican in politics.
