Senator from the Thirty-first district, composed of the counties of Boone and Story, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, May 19, 1864, of Welsh parents. His early education was received in the public schools of that city. In October, 1873, he moved with his family to Beacon, Mahaska county, Iowa, where he attended the public schools. Moved to Carroll county in 1875, and engaged in farming until he was twenty-five years of age. After leaving the farm went into business first at Dedham and later at Carrollton. Was married to Maggie Brammer December 31, 1885, and has four children, one son and three daughters. In 1905 moved to Ames. Iowa, and held the position of superintendent of grounds and buildings until 1910, when he entered the retail coal and ice business. Has held various political offices such as township trustee and city councilman. Also served as mayor while a resident of the city of Dedham. Was elected to the senate in 1916 on the republican ticket.
