Senator from the Fiftieth district, composed of the counties of Buena Vista, Pocahontas and Humboldt, was born May 16, 1869, in Boone county, Ill. Came with his parents to Pocahontas county, Iowa, in 1871 and lived on the home farm until he engaged in business in Gilmore City. Was educated in the country and graded schools. Has been engaged in banking and farm loan business with his brother, L. H. Van Alstine since 1890. Is interested in farming and has been active in establishing the Portland cement industry at Gilmore City. He was married in 1896 to M. Bertha Beers of Gilmore City. They are the parents of five children, Lois, H. Dana, Francis Everett, Sewell and Percie Ellen. H. S. Van Alstine was elected to fill a vacancy and began his service in the legislature with the Thirty-seventh general assembly. Was re-elected in 1918. Is a member of Masonic orders, and K. of P. During World war was active in government service. Is a republican in politics.
