Senator from eighth district, including Mills and Montgomery counties, was born February 10, 1867, in Warren county, Iowa, of Scotch descent. Educated in public schools of Des Moines and Monroe, Iowa, and Monroe high school. When thirteen his father died. Began business career as clerk in a country store, later as proprietor. In 1900 he joined his brother-in-law, the late Thos. D. Murphy, in organizing a company for the manufacture and sale of art calendars at Red Oak. For the first eighteen years he was sales manager. A sales force was built and a market established in all English-speaking countries. For the past eleven years he has been general manager and is now president of the company. During the World war he was a member of the district exemption board for the southern district of Iowa and president of the Montgomery county Red Cross. He has served as alderman and park commissioner of Red Oak. Is now president of National Advertising Specialty association, director of the Employers Mutual Casualty company, vice-president Red Oak Trust and Savings and of the Red Oak National bank, and past president of the Iowa Manufacturer's association. His wife, whose maiden name was Myrtle Murphy, died May 13, 1924. He has three daughters, Mrs. Malcolm D. Lomas, Mrs. J. Lyman Turner and Frances M. Cochrane, all of Red Oak, Iowa.
