Senator from the seventh district, composed of Page and Fremont counties, was born in Page county, Iowa, December 8, 1892. He was educated in the public schools of Page county, and graduated from Simpson college, Indianola, Iowa, and from Western Reserve law school of Cleveland, Ohio. He has practiced law in Shenandoah and Clarinda, Iowa, since 1922. He was county attorney of Page county from 1925 to 1931. He was married to Margaret Griffith of Des Moines, Iowa, in June, 1926, and they have four children: Martha Mary, Margaret Ruth, John Paul and James Newton. He is a member of Alpha Tau Omega college fraternity, Phi Delta Phi law fraternity, the Masonic lodge, and the Presbyterian church. Elected representative in 1930, re-elected in 1932, and elected as senator in 1934. A republican.
