Senator from the thirtieth district, Polk county, was born at Scranton, Greene county, Iowa, May 13, 1892, the son of Dr. John J. and Margaret McCune Gillespie. He was reared in Des Moines and educated in the Des Moines schools. Studied pharmacy and pre-medics at Highland Park college and Drake University in Des Moines. Engaged in retail drug business since 1917. Served in World war in 1918. Married Bessie Pring of Des Moines, June 19, 1918, and they have one daughter, Betty Lou. Held no public office until elected to the Senate in 1936. A democrat.
