Graduated Wheaton College, Illinois, and later took postgraduate work in University of Chicago. After a teaching career, during which he served as superintendent of schools at Guttenberg and Postville, Iowa, he entered the practice of law at Guttenberg in 1921. World War I veteran with overseas service. Served as county attorney of Clayton county, 1925-1929. Past district governor of 11th District Rotary International. Past president Iowa State Society for Crippled Children. Married Margaret Sherwood of Sioux City. Father of one son, Robert S. Elected to the Senate in 1940. Majority floor leader 50th general assembly.
