Born March 3, 1812, in Butler, Kentucky. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in Simpson, Kentucky in 1833. In 1838, he moved to Iowa Territory, going on to represent Van Buren County in the House of Representatives of the Third and Fifth Legislative Assemblies of the Iowa Territory from 1840 to 1841 and 1842 to 1843, respectively. On November 11, 1841, he married Lucy Ann Perkins in Athens, Clark County, Missouri. The couple made their permanent residence in Clark County. Mr. Lewis died July 28, 1887.
