Attended Parsons College from 1939 to 1943; graduated with a B.S. degree. Served in U.S. navy until 1946. Married Elsie Mae Larson 1947; one daughter, Christine. Partner in John Deere implement store, Fairfield, Iowa. Member of Lutheran church, Masonic lodge, Rotary club. Elected to Senate in 1956.
