Born January 8, 1791, in Deep River, Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Benjamin and Margaret England Harris. Mr. Harris married Miss Hannah Massey October 3, 1811, in North Carolina. He was one of the first settlers in Johnson County, Iowa. Iowa Governor Lucas appointed Mr. Harris judge of probate for Johnson County in 1838. In 1843, he was elected to the Iowa Territorial Council representing Johnson County. After the death of his wife in 1841, he married Elenor Purdy in 1844.
