Minburn Dallas County Democrat. Born on farm near Minburn, Iowa, September 16, 1937. Only son of Scott and Alma Shirley. Graduated from Minburn High School in 1955 and Iowa State University in 1957 with a B.S. degree in animal husbandry. President of ISU Young-Democrats and active in Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity. Belongs to National Guard and had six months active duty in 1960. Presently engaged in livestock farming at Minburn. Married Janice Denison of North English in 1961. Two daughters, Kim and Lori. Vice president of County Farmers Union. Democratic committeeman, state farm labor committee of Iowa Farmers Union. Member of Methodist Church. Serving first term.
