Iowa City Johnson County Democrat. Born on a farm near Bedford, Iowa, November 25, 1890. Son of Thomas Shelton and Luvira Titus Mahan. Attended Bedford grade and high school, valedictorian class of 1909. Received B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history and education, State University of Iowa. Married an SUI graduate, Edna Rohret of Cosgrove, April 22, 1914. Two sons: Louis F., a college of engineering graduate, and Thomas P., a college of medicine graduate, SUI. Superintendent of schools, Cascade, four years; assistant principal Iowa City High School five years; associate editor State Historical Society six years; member SUI staff 1923-1961. Director and Dean SUI Extension Division 32 years. Retired as professor and dean emeritus, 1961. Longtime member board in control of athletics and board of trustees, school of religion, SUI. Author books, articles, and pageants on Iowa history. Clubs: Triangle, Rotary, K. of C. Member Catholic Church. Served in 60th, 60th Extra and 61st sessions of general assembly.
