H. Gates Angle
Linn County
Born in May 26, 1823, in New York. Mr. Angle came to Iowa and settled in Linn County. He was an active businessman, ardent politician, and occupied a prominent place in public affairs. In 1858, Mr. Angle was the Republican candidate for State Senator and it was one of the hottest local fights ever known in Linn County. Hon. J. W. Henderson was the opposing candidate and he was a hard man to beat at any time, and in this canvass made one of his famous cavalry charges and came very near being elected. Mr. Angle, however, was elected by about 25 majorities and served his term in the Senate with credit to himself and the country. Mr. Angle was engaged in the milling business with Dr. Ely, a large part of the time he lived here and owned valuable property in the city. He removed from here about the year 1868, and was largely engaged in railroading and was contractor for building the Portage and Lake Superior railroad in Chicago. Mr. Angle died August 6, 1882, and is buried in Oakhill Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
