Graduated from Aquin High School, Cascade, Iowa. Received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids. Completed a master’s degree in counseling at Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, Missouri. Pursued further education at the University of Iowa in social work and education.

Member of Quad Cities Interfaith and Progressive Action for the Common Good. Served on Scott County Democratic Party Committee.
