HORACE C. DAGGETT

Mr. Speaker: Your committee appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable Horace C. Daggett, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Mr. Daggett, son of Mildred (Rundlett) and Donald Daggett, was born on May 15, 1931 in Prescott, Iowa. Horace graduated valedictorian from the Prescott Community School District in 1948. He played basketball, receiving Honorable Mention All-State recognition his senior year.

Horace was united in marriage on September 28, 1952 with Ruth A. Foster, and to this union five children were born: Sherry, Dennis, Debra, Dale and Douglas.

Horace began farming in 1950 on 160 acres near Prescott and retired from that occupation in 1991.

Horace’s military career began in 1949 when he joined the Army National Guard in Corning, Iowa, as a member of the 168th Infantry. He concluded his career as Sergeant Major, one of the highest ranks attainable by non-commissioned personnel.

Horace began his public life in 1968 with his election to the Lenox School Board. In 1973, he began serving in the Iowa House of Representatives, serving 24 years. He truly loved these endeavors and viewed himself as a servant to his constituents. In 1996, he was selected Republican National Legislator of the Year.

Mr. Horace C. Daggett died on June 16, 1998 at the age of 67 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sherry, and son Dale. His wife, Ruth; sons, Dennis (wife Cindy) and Douglas (wife Ellen); daughter Debra (husband Lon Soukup); and ten grandchildren survive him.

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-eighth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Horace C. Daggett, the State has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
