Born in Fort Madison, Iowa, on September 1, 1948, son of Wayne and Irene Hughes. Graduated from Fort Madison High School, 1966. B.A., University of Northern Iowa, 1970. M.A., Northwest Missouri State University, 1979. Married Linda Derrough in 1968. Children: Michael and Kristin, twins, born in 1974. High School teacher since 1970. Member of United Church of Christ. Second term.
