Born July 6, 1946, in St. Cloud, Minn., son of Fred and Ruth Haverland. Graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School, 1964; Princeton University, B.A., 1968; Harvard Divinity School, Master of Divinity, 1976; Fulbright Scholarship, University of Munich, West Germany, 1976-77. Served as a Navy pilot, 1968-73. Ordained a United Methodist minister, 1978. Member of Ankeny School Board, 1978-82, president in 1979-80. Member of Ankeny Optimist Club, Iowa League of Women Voters, American Federation of the Blind, Common Cause, National Wildlife Federation, Iowa Civil Liberties Union. Married to the Rev. Faith Ferre, associate minister at the First Christian Church in Des Moines. First term.
