Joseph Mann
Jones County
Joseph Mann was born on February 7, 1824, in Hancock, Maryland, to John Hill Mann and Elizabeth Warford. He began his legal career in 1846, studying under his uncle and congressman Job Mann in Bedford, Pennsylvania. (Joseph’s father, served in the Maryland House of Delegates.) In 1849, he moved to Anamosa, Iowa, where he lived until 1865, serving during that time as both a county judge and a state senator. In 1865, he relocated to Colorado, initially working in mining for three years in Clear Creek County before settling in Golden. There, he continued his public service, holding various positions including probate judge, justice of the peace, county attorney, and a member of the Colorado House of Representatives. Mann married Calphurnia Peet in Jones County, Iowa, in 1851. The couple had one son before her death in 1867. He later married Mary E. Young in Denver in 1872. Joseph Mann passed away in Golden, Colorado, on November 22, 1905.
