Awarded scholarship to Iowa State University. Married Doris Maxwell 1929. Six children: Carol Messer, Charlotte Young, Charlene Larson, Charles M., Frederic, and John. Engaged in farming, livestock feeding and breeding of registered Polled Hereford cattle with sons, Frederic and John, and son-in-law, Emmet Messer. Served as president of school board. New London Farmers Coop., County Farm Bureau and County 4-H Club committee. Served on bank, church and livestock boards and as Republican precinct and congressional committeeman. President of Southeast Iowa Hereford Association and Henry County Livestock Feeders. Member Farm Bureau, American and American Polled Hereford Associations, and Iowa Beef producers. Methodist. Served in 60th, 60th Extra, 61st, 62nd, 63rd and 64th Assemblies.
