Born in 1826 in Ohio, he was the son of John and Eunice Taylor Burris. In the 1850’s Mr. Burris was involved in founding Burris City, Iowa, which was destroyed by floods in 1858. Later in Montana he was involved in developing a town to be known as Ophir. He and nine other men were working in a logging party when they were killed in a massacre near the mouth of the Marias River, twelve miles from Fort Benton, Montana Territory. He represented Louisa County in the Fifth Iowa General Assembly, 1856-57.
