Davenport Scott County Republican. Born in Stillwater, Minn., April 25, 1924, one of 12 children of Elmer D. and Lulu M. Knowles. Attended Grinnell, Iowa, schools, and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1942. Was a pilot in the Air Force in World War II. Married Virginia Shepherd while they were students at the University of Iowa in 1946. Entered the insurance business while at the University of Iowa, was agent, district manager and general agent for National Life of Vermont for 14 years. Now with Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. Graduated from State University of Iowa in 1949 with B. S. degree in Commerce and moved to Davenport. Chartered Life Underwriters degree. Licensee Powers System of Estate Analysis. Active in Davenport Junior Chamber of Commerce, president; Quad Cities Sales Executive Club, president; Davenport Chamber of Commerce, director; Kiwanis Club, American Legion, etc. Attends Trinity Episcopal Church. The Knowles family includes twins Deborah and Paul, 5, and Suzanne 8. Interests, politics, guitar playing and singing ballads. Serving first term.
