ORA C. WILLIAMS
MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Ora C. Williams, begs leave to submit the following memorial:
Ora C. Williams, son of Thomas and Mary Hootman Williams, was born at Birmingham, Iowa, August 30, 1892, and passed away at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, March 23, 1959.
He was married in 1914 to Helen Workman of Birmingham who died in 1915. They had one daughter who died as a small child. He was married March 18, 1920, to Elsie Miller of Birmingham, who survives.
Ora served in the army of the United States from July 20, 1916, to April 5, 1919. During that time he served in Texas, New Jersey, and six months at LaMons in France.
He was associated for a number of years with his brother, Glenn, in the carpentry trade. In 1922 he was appointed deputy sheriff of Van Buren county and served for four years. He was elected sheriff in 1926 and served through 1930. Leaving that office he went into the plumbing business in 1931, changing to the furniture business in 1935.
Ora served two terms in the Iowa State Legislature, the Fifty-first and the Fifty-second General Assemblies. He was a member of the American Legion, serving as post commander on several occasions and as county commander.
He was a member of the Methodist church and Masonic orders.
Besides his wife he leaves four brothers, Ezra and Floyd of Birmingham and Glenn and Irving of Keosauqua, and three sisters, Mrs. Esther Burns of Ottumwa, Mrs. Florence McCall of Denver and Mrs. Ethel Buckmaster of Derby, Colorado.
Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-eighth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Ora C. Williams the state has lost on honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its sympathy to his wife and the members of his family.
Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the wife of the deceased.
