Waverly Bremer County Republican. Born at St. Lucas, Fayette county, Iowa, June 10, 1894, son of Ben and Anna Gardner. Attended St. Luke's parochial schools and worked as farm hired man until 18, when he began teaching in Iowa rural schools. Later entered Pio Nono college at St. Francis, Wis., graduating from the Normal department, 1917. Taught school again until he entered service in the army during the first World War. Discharged as sergeant, March 6, 1919. Was united in marriage to Anna M. Sherman of Allenton, Wis., May 6, 1919. Father of six children: Sgt. Vincent, 22, in officers training school, Army; Daniel, (SK 1/c, U.S. Navy, on U.S.S. Mississippi); Agnes, 19; Juanita, 16; Patricia, 11; Jude, 9. Farmed at Allerton for twelve years. Active member of Dairy Herd Improvement Association in Wisconsin for five years. Active in the Republican party, serving as township committeeman and election official for that party in Wisconsin. Moved to Waverly in 1932. Member of St. Mary's Catholic parish, and American Legion at Waverly. Salesman for a monument manufacturing company and part owner of a farm. Serving second term.
