Samuel Workman

Born September 15, 1824, and died at the age of fifty-six in Memphis, Tennessee, January, 1881. Mr. Workman came to Johnson county, Iowa, a youth, in early days and was for many years a powerful figure in public affairs. An acute and successful business man he took an active part in politics, and represented this district in the State Senate with credit to himself and his party. In 1843, he was on the committee to organize a branch of the Episcopal church. In 1846, he went to New York, then on to Wolcottville, Conn. and engaged in the wool business. He became a stockholder in the Union Mfg. Co, later known as the Torrington Woolen Mills. He became its president. He was town clerk, member of the Wolcottville Band, while his brother Andrew was the leader of the band.
