Born January 28, 1810 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky, and died January 10, 1878. He married Lucinda Maria Starrett on September 30, 1830 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Indiana. She was born January 11, 1811, and died April 1, 1843. They had four children. He married Esther Ann Auten on October 10, 1843 in Monticello, Piatt, Illinois. They had seven children. Doctor Hillis was a regular practicing physician and served in the Civil War as surgeon in a Wisconsin regiment. He served as state senator in Iowa.
