STEPHEN ANTHONY MARTIN

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Stephen Anthony Martin, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Stephen Anthony Martin, businessman, and legislator, was born in Appanoose county, November 26, 1871 and passed away on February 16, 1957. He was the son of Anthony and Harriett E. Ellis Martin.

Mr. Martin was educated in the public schools of Centerville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ann Brown Martin, February 19, 1936. He was united in marriage with Elizabeth Rippey on December 26, 1942.

As a youngster, Mr. Martin worked as a delivery boy for Major Stanton, an early Centerville merchant. Later he worked in the mines in the winter, and in the summer he delivered ice for Bill McKee. In 1897 he, together with the late Bowler Bryant, bought Bill McKee’s ice business, and later Mr. Martin bought out Bryant’s share. Between the years of 1905 and 1933 Mr. Martin was in partnership with four other men, but in 1933 he became sole owner of the ice business.

Other enterprises with which Mr. Martin was connected was the brick business in Centerville and the locker plants, both at the Pure Ice Plant and up town.

A Republican, he served in the Forty-eighth, Forty-ninth, Fiftieth, Fiftieth Extra, and Fifty-first sessions of the General Assembly as Representative from Appanoose County.

He served four years on the City Council, was a member of the Methodist church, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Shrine, and Elks Lodge.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Martin, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. N. A. Winter.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fifty-eighth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Stephen Anthony Martin, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution, would express its sympathy to his wife and daughter.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.

J. D. CURRIE,
