DAVID A. DANCER

Mr. Speaker: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character, and public service of the late Honorable David Anderson Dancer, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Mr. Dancer was born at Lamoni, Iowa, Decatur County, on October 7, 1896. On November 17, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Florence Messerli, to which union were born three daughters.

He attended public schools at Lamoni, and served twenty-two months in the army, holding the commission of First Lieutenant. He was a charter member of the Ralph A. Judson post of American Legion at Lamoni, served on the Lamoni City Council for ten years, was a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Grain and Seed Company, was president of the Decatur Farm Bureau and was chairman of the board of the Lamoni Cooperative Creamery Association.

A 1917 graduate of the University of Iowa, he received the school’s distinguished service award in 1964. He was a member of the alumni associations at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. He was named secretary of the Regents, a position he held until 1968. He then served as director of alumni relations for the Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery for two years. Dancer Hall, a dormitory at the University of Northern Iowa, is named for Mr. Dancer.

A Republican, Mr. Dancer represented Decatur County in the Forty-sixth, Forty-sixth Extra, Forty-seventh, Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth General Assemblies. He served as Speaker Pro Tempore in the Forty-ninth General Assembly.

Mr. Dancer died on October 11, 1982 in Sun City, Arizona. Survivors are his wife, Florence; three daughters, Alice White of Sun City, Arizona, JoAnn Stone, Backus, Minnesota, and Jane Tipken of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren and six great­grandchildren.

Now Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventieth General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable David Anderson Dancer, the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful and useful public servant, and the House by this Resolution would express its appreciation of his service.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
