PAUL I. D. OSTBY

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Paul I. D. Ostby, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

The Honorable Paul I. D. Ostby was born October 27, 1876, in Austin, Minnesota, and passed away at Kensett, Iowa, on September 16, 1951, at the age of 74 years. He was the son of the Reverend and Mrs. Paul G. Ostby.

He received a rural school education, and attended St. Ansgar Seminary and Institute in 1892 and 1893.

He was active in southern Minnesota politics during the early days of the Farmer Labor party.

Mr. Ostby was united in marriage to Emma C. Gavle in 1898 and to this union were born six sons and six daughters: Mrs. Andrew Nygaard, Madison Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. F. E. Ganther, Bremerton, Washington; Mrs. L. O. Erickson, Hudson, Wisconsin; Mrs. Helmer Bakken, Albert Lea, Minnesota; Mrs. Reuben Stovern, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mrs. Francis Ryan, Kensett, Iowa; William Ostby, Silverdale, Washington; Eugene of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Roger of Graettinger, Iowa; Thomas of East Detroit, Michigan; Wallace of Kensett and Otto of Kensett.

He moved to a farm in Brookfield Township, Worth County, Iowa, April 7, 1931. He was elected State Representative from Worth County in the Democratic landslide of 1932, having been a resident of the State of Iowa but one year and seven months on the day of election. Mr. Ostby was a Democrat in politics. He served in the Forty-fifth and Forty-fifth Extra sessions of the House of Representatives. Later, he was an unsuccessful candidate for commerce commissioner.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Paul I. D. Ostby, and twelve children.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representative of the Fifty-fifth- General Assembly of Iowa, That in the passing of the Honorable Paul I. D. Ostby, the State has lost a valued and honored citizen, and the House would tender its sincere sympathy to the surviving members of his family in their sorrow.

Be It Further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
