THORVALD G. JENSEN

MR. SPEAKER: Your committee, appointed to prepare a suitable resolution commemorating the life, character and public service of the late Honorable Thorvald G. Jensen, begs leave to submit the following memorial:

Thorvald G. Jensen was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, August 7, 1874, the son of Karen and Jens Jensen.

He attended Highland Park College, Des Moines, Iowa, and Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mr. Jensen was united in marriage to Kirstine Simonsen in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kimballton, Iowa, on September 27, 1905. To this marriage were born eight children, four sons and four daughters.

Most of Mr. Jensen’s adult life was spent in the construction business in Audubon, Kimballton and Elk Horn, Iowa. He also started the Jensen Construction Company, mainly bridge construction, in 1910, and this business is presently operated by his sons in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was a charter member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kimballton, and was president of the church board for ten years. Mr. Jensen was much interested in community affairs and was instrumental in starting the first Welfare Club in Kimballton, of which he was president for a number of years. He was Mayor of Kimballton for two terms; also town council member for a number of years. He served on the school board, and on the Synod Board of the Danish Evangelical Church as Treasurer of the Pension Fund. The town of Kimballton was donated a swimming pool, which he built.

He was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives from Audubon county and served in the Forty-fifth and Forty-fifth Extra sessions of the General Assembly.

Mr. Jensen passed away on April 16, 1958, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital, Audubon, Iowa. He is survived by his widow and children: Erling, Evald, Bernhard and Gerald Jensen, all of Des Moines, and Mrs. Niels Boelth, Kimballton, Iowa; Mrs. Vernon Larsen, Elk Horn, Iowa; Mrs. Harold Hoegh, Atlantic, Iowa, and Mrs. Clayton Nielsen, Omaha, Nebraska, and one·brother, Reverend V. S. Jensen, Des Moines, Iowa.

Therefore, Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Fiftyeighth General Assembly of Iowa: That in the passing of the Honorable Thorvald G. Jensen the state has lost an honored citizen and a faithful, useful public servant, and the House, by this resolution would express its appreciation of his service, and tender its sympathy to the members of his family.

Be It Further Resolved: That a copy of this resolution be spread upon the Journal of the House, and that the Chief Clerk be directed to forward an enrolled copy to the family of the deceased.
